History of institute

Rooted in the timeless wisdom of the Kena Upanishad — “Through the acquisition of knowledge, one achieves immortality” (Chapter 2, Verse 4) — the journey of Prem Chand Markanda S.D. College for Women began with the noble vision of liberating society from the darkness of ignorance through the light of education.

The college was formally established on July 23, 1973, under the enlightened leadership of Seth Rup Chand Ji Budhia, Pt. Prem Chand Markanda, and Pt. Dharam Paul Dada. Its legacy, however, extends far deeper into history, tracing back to 1884, when the Sanatan Dharam Sabha inaugurated its first educational institution at Sanatan Dharam Mandir, Mai Hiran Gate, Jalandhar.

Over the decades, the college flourished through the unwavering commitment of many illustrious visionaries, including Seth Hukam Chand Ji Nauhria, Pt. Dewan Chand Ji Dada, and Lala Shiv Nath Ji Khanna. Among them, Sh. Pritam Chand Budhia stands out for his three decades of dedicated service and farsighted guidance, which strengthened the institution’s foundations and established its reputation in the sphere of women’s education.

In a befitting tribute to Pt. Prem Chand Ji Markanda’s 35 years of devoted service, the college was renamed Prem Chand Markanda S.D. College for Women. Though the institution initially faced challenges of limited space and resources, it blossomed into a vibrant citadel of learning, securing a distinguished place in the field of higher education for women.

Today, the college stands as a living testament to vision, perseverance, and dedication. It continues to uphold its cherished ideals while evolving into a dynamic center of academic excellence, nurturing generations of empowered women and carrying forward a proud legacy of knowledge, service and enlightenment.
